Maintenance
Wool is a nice material to make clothes from because it is antibacterial and odor-resistant. Wool clothing therefore does not need to be washed often. Hang the garment outside occasionally so that it can freshen up. If you do want to wash the garment, we recommend Texelana Wool Detergent . Never rub hard when hand washing, to prevent felting. Always check the label in the garment for the washing instructions. Always let wool clothing dry flat.
If you treat your wool garment in this way, it will not only stay nicer and last longer, but by airing instead of washing, you also save the environment.
Storing woolen clothes
We recommend that you store your woolen clothing clean, possibly with a bag of lavender; this keeps the moths away. It is also best to store woolen clothing lying down, so that the elasticity of the wool is not affected.
Pills and fluff
Wool can pill or fluff through use. This has nothing to do with the quality of the wool. Pilling is a natural phenomenon that is mainly caused by friction. Wool consists of many hairs with a natural crimp (curls). Friction can cause the wool to pill and felt. With felting, the hairs join together through friction. In fact, every movement causes friction. You will often find the fluff/pills on the sleeves and under the armpits.
New clothing may sometimes still have some loose hairs left behind after the weaving and knitting process.
Pills and fluff on your beautiful (merino) wool clothing are unfortunately unavoidable. We have some tips to delay this process somewhat and how to remove the fluff and pills. For this information we refer you to our blog.
Bergans of Norway
Bergans of Norway has been driven by dedicated and passionate outdoor enthusiasts for over a century. We introduced and patented the backpack as we know it today, an invention used by famous polar explorers such as Amundsen and Scott on their expeditions. No other outdoor equipment manufacturer can match our heritage in polar exploration - or our ambition to share this heritage with today's adventurers. Bergans was founded in 1908 and has played a major role in Norwegian outdoor life for over a century.
